Area of study includes; life science& Ecology, Watershed studies, Earth Science& Geology. Students are going as a teambuilding experience that builds upon their instruction in STEM areas. Brookland Middle School is an arts integrated school, so while students experience math and science in the classroom we have few programs outside of class materials dedicated to expanding our students knowledge in STEM. By attending Naturebridge, students get to experience environmental science in a hands on way, apply things theyve heard about in math and science to the real world, and expand their science literacy skills through reading and writing activities throughout the program. The mission of this trip is for students to explore environmental science and expand their environmental literacy. It is important to give students access to environmental science outside of the classroom because the world is constantly changing. With climate change, deforestation, pollution, and other problems impacting the existence of life on earth as we know it, the more we expose students to now the more they will be able to lead the solutions for the future. For some of our students, they have never been outside of DC, so we aim to expose them to this environment to inspire them to take action. This trip will preview/build upon the NGSS standards related to ecosystems (MS-LS2-2, MS-LS2-5) , weather/climate (MS-ESS3-5) , as well as expose students to environmental literacy which they may not have had an experience with. Students will be able to take what they already know from class and apply it to a real world scenario, and see the bridge between the content and possible college and career opportunities. Additionally, this trip will expand on the social/emotional learning students completed throughout the year as they work through team building and confidence building exercises. The intended outcome is for students to experience environmental science in a real life setting, experience an environment outside of DC, and to build their social emotional skills. By allowing students to experience environmental science through the NatureBridge program, we hope to inspire them to explore and consider college and career options in the environmental science fields. 5.
